Renee first came to the site of Hierakonpolis as a visitor in
1982, after earning her MA from the University of California,
Berkeley with a thesis on the Predynastic cemetery at Naga ed
Der. Overwhelmed by the Predynastic riches of Hierakonpolis, she
became a member of the team and returned in 1983 to assist Fred
Harlan in his site-wide sampling survey. Form there she went on
to serve as the ceramic analyst for the excavations at HK29A,
the late Predynastic ceremonial center, Egypt's earliest temple,
and to direct excavations at HK64, a campsite at the foot of a
petroglyph coverd outcropping. She received her Ph.D in 1994 from
the University of California, Berkeley, writing a dissertation
on Predynastic settlement ceramics, including those from Hierakonpolis.
Author of several articles, she also co-edited the memorial volume
for Michael Hoffman, The Followers of Horus, and co-authored
the popular book Egypt Uncovered. Co-director of the Hierakonpolis
Expedition since 1996, she is also the Heagy Research curator
at the British Museum.
